Top Interior Design Trends in 2022

Since the beginning of the year, we’ve all been reading blogs about design trends in 2022. We decided to wait a bit before posting ours, because we wanted to get a better handle on how 2022 is shaping up in the design world. This has allowed us more time to give you a report on our insights, rather than look into our crystal ball to create yet another list of predictions. We’ve come up with what we think are the three most dominant and exciting interior design trends in 2022.

In the past year, design trends have largely been a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With people spending more time at home, there is a renewed desire to make living and working from home a better experience for everyone in the family. Our homes will continue to play an outsized role in 2022, as we witness the ongoing need for soothing colors to create a feeling of calm and comfort where we live, livened up by adding pieces of visual interest. We’ve also noticed an extended interest in elevated but functional outdoor spaces.

Color: Serene and Neutral Tones

Our pick for a color palette for 2022 is filled with warm neutrals. They are a great starting point, offering a blank canvas that makes small rooms appear more spacious, while brightening up dark corners. If you are afraid of being too boring, you can always add a splash of a contrasting color.

According to the color expert Maria Killam, in 2022 we will see wall color trends shifting away from white toward warmer neutrals: “This means saying goodbye to all those white walls and opting for more complex, warm hues combined with richer colors…Neutrals, especially beige, are back.” She goes on to say, “Beige is suddenly sexy.” Taupe is a good way to warm up any space, creating a reassuring vibe, and helping you feel serene and centered.

But let’s not leave out the color green, one of the hot color trends that keeps showing up on everyone’s list. This choice of color signals a desire to return to a simple and more natural design style by bringing the outdoors into the home. It is also a versatile and neutral color that can be paired with just about anything. In color psychology, green represents nature, evoking a feeling of abundance and creating a sense of refreshment, peace, and security. It is often associated with growth and renewal, and is said to promote optimism and balance.

Furniture: Sculptured Curves

In 2022, say you can bid adieu to straight lines and sharp angles. From a psychological perspective, a curved form is interpreted as safe and welcoming. From subtly rounded to circular, curved furniture can add softness and a sense of effortless flow to a room.

Furniture with sloping lines and curved silhouettes not only adds some glamour to a space, but also makes a statement to become the focal point of a room. It is a style that goes well with virtually any design style, from traditional to contemporary. It also pairs well with geometric designs.

While some designers might tell you that the curved furniture trend began after World War II, when advances in furniture manufacturing made it possible to introduce more intricate shapes on a large-scale level, others point to the 1970s, with a resurgence of the Art Deco Style. But there are lots of reasons why this trend is back in fashion, especially as we all feel some degree of pandemic fatigue. Curves are not only fun and playful, but also cozy. Their organic shape is also deeply connected to the biophilic design trend.

Curved furniture can break up the straight lines in a room, add softness and a feel of relaxation, and create a genuinely interesting space. Rather than feeling old-fashioned, today’s curvilinear furniture is soft and spongy, and will certainly be an antidote to the stay-at-home blues.

Lifestyle: Elevated Outdoor Space

Outdoor living has played a major role since the beginning of the pandemic. Now that spring is just around the corner again, people are thinking about moving outdoors to cook, dine and entertain. These fun and practical outdoor spaces can be designed to match your home’s interior, whether it’s traditional, contemporary or rustic. A good design can turn your backyard into an outdoor living room. We’re seeing some great new styles of elegant and sophisticated outdoor furniture that is super durable, so it can be left outside, even year round.

Outdoor kitchens will expand your living space, make outdoor dining more convenient, minimize utility bills because you’re not running the air conditioning, and will save you money on eating out. It also is a great way to entertain, and keeps the cooking odors outdoors
